Trailheads

People often confuse different park terminology, and for good reason. It often does not matter much since you still get to enjoy the park or your hike by simply being in the outdoors. The different terminology does come in handy when trying to plan a hike. This page is an attempt to clarify what exactly is a trailhead, what are the differences between them, and what is important to keep in mind when planning your hikes. If you are an experienced hiker, please add the trailheads you know to our database so that others can easily learn about them.

Trailhead - a beginning of a trail. A trailhead may or may not be near a partking area, contain clear markings with its name and distance, be wheelchair accessible, belong to a park, etc. Some trailheads are part of parks and trails that may have a fee associated with them to either park, or for the use of the actual trail or the park.

Browse Existing Trailheads or Add a Trailhead

We realize that no single person or organization can map all the starting points for trails. That is why we are working on a way to let the hiking community add these points. Take a look at the map of trailheads below. If one you know of is not there, you can add a trailhead to the map below.

Trailheads vs. Trails

One of the most often confused points is the difference between a trail and a trailhead. The trailhead is the beginning of a trail. The difference may be a subtle if you think that finding a trailhead is the same as finding a trail, but when you are planning a hike (especially a group hike) the attention to the trailhead begins to take a more important role.

Important Things About Trailheads

  • Parking availability and how many cars (important for group hikes and carpool organziation)
  • Parking or trail-entrance cost
  • Access by public transportation
  • Bathroom availability
  • Is the trailhead inside a park? If so, does the park have more than one trailhead? If so, do not confuse the different trailheads

Not All Trailheads Are In Parks

While the majority of trailheads are in their respective parks, some cross-country trails start at places where there really isn't a park. Also, if you hike inside the city, it is likely that the trails you take simply do not have official or even semi-official starting points to them.

Trailhead Name: Jackueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir

Park: Central Park

Trailhead Description: Bathrooms are only available at local businesses outside the park. Parking is available on the street, but it is unrealistic to expect to find any in this area. The meeting point is near the reservoir path, but just off the path because the path around the Jackueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir is narrow and we do not want to block people who are walking while we wait for our group to meet.

Trailhead Name: Amherst State Park

Trailhead Description: If you are just looking to take a walk, this is a good place, but if you are looking for a place to hike through the woods this isn’t it. This is a nice park in Williamsville accessed from Mill st. where a lot and I mean a lot of people take their dogs, who were all well mannered and happy dogs when I went! Most of the paths here are just mowed paths through open fields along the perimeter of the park property with a few exceptions. Ellicott creek flows though this park so that was a highlight for me. it was muddy when I went on 4/3/2011, but manageable if you didn’t mind a little mud. I tried to walk and map all pg the paths I could find, and tell where they were, and found around 1.5 miles of paths, but there could be more. The trail starts at: N42 58.368 W78 44.885

Trailhead Description: Rising steeply to the east behind the city of Fremont, Mission and Monument peaks form a dramatic backdrop to the South Bay. Mission Peak has been described as one of the Bay Area's most underrated summits. The determined hiker who reaches its top will be rewarded with views of Mount Hamilton to the south, the Santa Cruz Mountains to the west, Mt. Tamalpais to the north, and Mt. Diablo and the Sierra Nevada to the northeast. About five hours are required to reach the summit and return. Mission Peak's 2,999 acres are accessible from a staging area at the east end of Stanford Avenue in Fremont (steep climb to the summit), or from parking lots at Ohlone College (more gradual ascent).
