Hiking
Beautiful red and orange sandstone. A wash runs through the outer ring, forming a small canyon. Plant life is moderate, consisting mostly of Juniper Trees, wild flowers and shrubs. Hiking activity is moderate, with sandstone rocks and boulders (jumping and crouching on the legs), long stretch of hills, short stretches (works calves, quads, hamstrings), flat areas for resting/breathtaking view of Shiprock and brilliant red colors in the evening sunsets. Hiking is very exciting and beautiful, the diversity of warm colors, and patches of cool, along with the blue skies. You will always have to have water everywhere of course. Wear hiking shoes to ease pressure on the feet. Bring a bag, pack some snacks and fruits. Hiking can range from 2-8 miles, depending on destination, rest, routes and overlooking. May be a smaller park compared to the big ones (Arches, Canyonlands, etc.) but hiking out here isn't "fixed" like others are. Best time to hike for scenery 5pm - 8pm in Spring and Summer; 4pm - 6pm in Fall and Winter.
